For Love of a Hunt

by Melissa {The Dominion Project}

This weekend I was itching to go thrift-store shopping, in hopes that I’d find some interesting furniture to fill up this place. So on Saturday morning, I set out with a little cash, some Starbucks and the anticipation of uncovering hidden treasures at rock-bottom prices.

It took a few stops over a couple of hours, but the moment I set eyes on these chairs (it’s a set of 4), I had to have them. I just love the quatrefoil detail! They’re rather Gothic Revival, don’t you think?

They’re going to be perfect for the breakfast area. I’ll definitely reupholster the seats – probably with a bold graphic patterned fabric. And the wood needs to be refinished or painted. We haven’t touched the breakfast nook/kitchen, so I need to work on some ideas. My first task needs to be a concept board (yes, for my own house). Things turn out much better when I have a plan!

Since buying these on Saturday, I’ve had quatrefoils on the brain. Turns out, a lot of other designers love them too! Here’s a favorite – Hickory Chair’s Alexandra Side Chair designed by Suzanne Kasler.

Maybe inspired by the quatrefoil in her own logo? I love that she took an old, classic element & used in a new & interesting way. That’s what design is all about!

This makes me want to paint my chairs a nice cream color. I need to get working on that concept board!

A First Look

by Melissa {The Dominion Project}

Every good project has to start somewhere. And this is it for the big ole house we now call home. The day Ethan & I walked in the door (circa April 2010), the house was bank-owned & had been empty for 9 months. Here are a few pics we snapped on our tour.

So far, so good. LOVE all the woodwork. Once it’s covered in a fresh coat of glossy paint, it will be beautiful! I’m feeling real good about this place. Until…I glance through the doorway of the master bedroom and see THIS!

Oh, yes. That’s exactly what you think it is. A giant, gaping hole in the ceiling (now affectionately known as “the person-sized hole”). I took one look & completely panicked (it was much scarier in person). But my handy husband (along with my even handier dad) assessed the situation & decided it wasn’t a deal-breaker. What are home inspections for anyway?

So on with the tour. Here’s the lovely upstairs.

There are a few more spaces, but that pretty much sums up the high points. Long story short – we made an offer, haggled for what felt like a year, and with the help of our awesome realtor friends – made a pretty sweet deal.

All it needs is paint & lighting. At least that’s what I kept saying – paint & lighting. Paint & lighting…

The Blog Begins

by Melissa {The Dominion Project}

About 7 months ago, my husband Ethan & I bought our first home. Since we both come from families of do-it-yourselfers, we were on the hunt for a place that needed some TLC. And being an interior designer, I was hungry for a new project.

After months of house hunting & disappointments from unaccepted offers on other places, we finally found “our house” – a sad, empty foreclosure with tons of potential, but in desperate need of a face-lift. And the fun began…

So why start blogging now? Simple. We’ve been working our tails off & we’re worn out!

There’s so much to be done around this place. And I’m always thinking about the next project, rather than admiring our handywork. So I figured this blog would be a great way to track our progress & share it with friends & family.

So enjoy…and welcome to our little adventure.
